Cleaning day!
It’s that time of year where the little bugs and tweaks in your computers starts to get annoying, you realize your iPod is full and you don’t listen to half the stuff on there anymore and it’s time to start cleaning out. So I broke out the stack of DVD-Rs and the portable hard drive and I’m simultaneously backing up two computers and prepping them to receive a new OS. Currently Gigan and Godzilla are copying important files on to the big hard drive in Gojira via network and sneakernet. Meanwhile I’m downloading all the latest drivers for my ThinkPad (Gigan) on the flash drive and preparing a new install DVD of XP with SP2 with nLite. I’m also going to try slipstreaming in my SATA drivers so I can avoid the voodoo dance that is installing Windows. For those not familiar the procedure is roughly as follows:
- Switch the controller to ATA/Compatibility mode in my BIOS.
- Install Windows XP on the computer.
- Install Chipset drivers
- Copy over (but don’t install) the SATA controller drivers, run installation prep script.
- Switch the controller back to full on SATA, then when Windows boots and decides not to crash, rush to complete the installation of drivers your hard drive controller…off your hard drive…on to your hard drive. Does anyone else see why I get nervous about that?
- Sigh of relief and install the other six bajillion things I need.
Hopefully I can just skip all of this with nLite.
Stay tuned for updates on two electronics projects up on deck to actually get built. (Yeah, I’m scared too)
